Background of the study:
The relationship between prostitution and crime has long been a subject of academic inquiry, with recent research suggesting that these activities may be interconnected through various socio-economic mechanisms. In Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, the dynamics of prostitution have been observed to influence crime rates, particularly in urban settings (Etim, 2023). Prostitution, often driven by economic desperation and limited opportunities, can be associated with other criminal activities such as drug trafficking and extortion (Ndukwe, 2024). The marginalization of sex workers further complicates this relationship, as they frequently operate on the fringes of the formal economy and are vulnerable to exploitation by criminal networks (Etim, 2023). Additionally, the lack of robust legal frameworks and social support systems contributes to the persistence of criminal behaviors in environments where prostitution is prevalent (Ndukwe, 2024). This study aims to evaluate the relationship between prostitution and crime in Calabar Municipality, investigating the socio-economic and structural factors that underpin this connection while offering insights into potential policy reforms (Etim, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
In Calabar Municipality, the prevalence of prostitution has been linked to an increase in related criminal activities, thereby posing challenges to law enforcement and community safety (Ndukwe, 2024). The stigmatization and marginalization of sex workers, combined with limited legal protections, create conditions where criminal elements exploit this vulnerability (Etim, 2023). Despite existing efforts to regulate prostitution, there remains a significant gap between policy and practice, which has contributed to ongoing criminal behavior in the region (Ndukwe, 2024). This study seeks to analyze these issues in depth and propose targeted interventions to reduce crime associated with prostitution (Etim, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of prostitution in Calabar Municipality.

  2. To analyze the relationship between prostitution and crime.

  3. To recommend policy interventions to mitigate crime in prostitution zones.

Research questions:

  1. What is the extent of prostitution in Calabar Municipality?

  2. How is prostitution related to the incidence of crime?

  3. What policy measures can reduce crime associated with prostitution?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Prostitution is significantly associated with increased crime rates.

  2. Economic deprivation influences the relationship between prostitution and crime.

  3. Effective policy interventions reduce crime in areas with high prostitution activity.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it sheds light on the interrelation between prostitution and crime, providing valuable insights for policymakers and law enforcement agencies. By identifying the socio-economic drivers of this relationship, the research offers a basis for developing targeted interventions that can enhance public safety and social order in Calabar Municipality (Etim, 2023; Ndukwe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the relationship between prostitution and crime in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State. It focuses exclusively on the interactions between these two phenomena and does not cover broader criminal activities.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Prostitution: The exchange of sexual services for monetary or material compensation.

  2. Crime: Acts that violate legal statutes and are punishable by law.

  3. Marginalization: The process of relegating a group to the fringes of society, limiting their access to resources and opportunities.
